Popular Trends: The Vicious Circle

There is something I have came to notice in regards to contemporary horror. There is an ongoing vicious circle of failure.

For example. Crappy Movie A comes out. Horror fans are disgusted, repulsed, and revolted, all in the wrong way. The movie is completely flawed. Yet, what are the "head honchos," of the genre saying?

  • "It's brilliant!"
  • "Sure to keep movie-goers returning!"
  • "Can't wait for the next one!"

All the while, any box office sales bomb, rentals are fair, yet the virus has started. Now, there will be two, three, four that copy the same shoddy effects and poor script.

Seeing as how we live in a world of positive reinforcement, where even obviously deliberate failure is met with applause instead of constructive criticism, there should be some reality to it all.

The best way to verify the content of a movie is to see what the VIEWERS think. They will be the audience you want to listen to.

Here are some reviews from actual people on popular horror movies:

Ring
Pathology
The Ruins
The Grudge

Oh, I will be discussing all of these in later posts. No stone will be left unturned and no inconsistency kept hidden.
